Camila was born in Quito, Ecuador, surrounded by a multicultural family and exposed to a bilingual environment (Spanish and English). Since part of her family lives in Canada, Camila spent her childhood summers there..

She learned about the role of psychologists when, as a child, her parents divorced and offered her this support as a precaution. Feeling supported and listened by an adult made her discover her future profession. In her last school year and during the summer of the first year of her undergraduate degree, she started volunteering at orphanages in Ecuador and Colombia. In here, she experienced, the complex process that adopting a child can be. She also experienced and understood the importance of a secure attachment in childhood.

Camila was also a high-performance athlete in figure ice-skating. She was chosen to compete and represent her country in different countries around the world. She knows first handed the pressure of competition, the moments in which you loose the focus, the perfectionism and the excess discipline exerted on the body.

Upon finishing school, she earned a scholarship for academic excellence and went to study at the best young university in Canada (University of Calgary). During those five years of being an international student in a foreign country, she faced different challenges such as learning a new language, missing family and friends and having to build relationships from scratch. In therapy, Camila understands, accompanies and shares with students and expatriate families, the process of adaptation to a new country and culture.

Camila visits her relatives in Spain when she finishes her undergraduate degree and falls in love with the country and culture. She decides to continue studying the Master’s degree of General Health Psychology at the University of Barcelona, where she discovered her interest in the Forensic and Penitentiary area. She does her clinical internship in the Mental Health Unit of Brians 2. This experience marks a before and after in her career, as she wonders how would the life of the prisoners had been if they had received the necessary support as children.

Within her professional life, Camila has worked in a multidisciplinary clinic specialized in early childhood with babies starting at 6 months of age. Some of them showed developmental delays (not walking or talking at ages when is typical to do so) as well as toddlers who presented possible signs of autism. The early stimulation became one of her special interests. She also enjoyed helping older children with behavioral problems, shyness, fears and separation anxiety teaming up side by side with families. Likewise, Camila has worked as a psychologist for high-performance athletes, including Olympic candidates.

She has always combined her work in the clinic with her role as a psychologist in schools. An important experience in school, was when they received refugee children and adolescents fleeing the war. Camila took the lead to create a support and care plan that was approved and implemented, it is successful and continues to be used today.

Working in a school environment allows Camila to be aware of the impact that psychological difficulties have in learning. She has been able to detect learning difficulties and disorders in time. She works hand in hand with teachers to provide the most adequate adaptations a child with attention deficit disorder or dyslexia might need to develop their full potential.

In therapy, Camila finds her vocation every day. Camila works based on her Cognitive Behavioral training, however, she is an eclectic psychologist, who adapts the tools and techniques to each patient. She uses humanistic psychology, focusing on the individual, on self-development, their strengths and growth. Camila finds the wonderful in each of her patients, allowing them to be themselves while healing.
